History of Turquoise

As one of the most adored gemstones in the world, Turquoise is an absolutely beautiful, mystical, and eye catching stone that has been around for centuries. The word Turquoise comes from an old French term pierre Turquoise, which means "stone of Turkey". Many Turkish merchants traded in Turquoise, so people believed that the stone originated there, when in fact they came from Persia. The gorgeous stone of Turquoise is actually native to arid regions of the Americas, China, Egypt, Persia, and Tibet. For thousands of years, Turquoise has spanned so many cultures, and is prized as being a powerful symbol of wisdom, protection, and nobility. It is one of the oldest stones in history and we still love it to this day!

Turquoise Jewelry

Worn by both women and men, it is easy to see why Turquoise has played such a significant role in the world of jewelry making. The visual appearance of Turquoise is so stunning, that it is the only gemstone to ever have an official color named after it! It's natural for Turquoise to range in color from bright shades of blue to darker Tibetan greens. The variations of color depend on the levels of copper and aluminum that are present in the water flowing through the rocks as it is formed.

Turquoise is known as the "sky stone" by the Tibetan people, insinuating that this stone came from the heavens. Many of our Turquoise pieces are hand crafted by skilled Tibetan artisans. Our Tibetan style earrings, pendants, and bracelets were hand picked on trips to Kathmandu, Nepal where Tibetan refugee communities now call home. Some of our other Turquoise designs are made incredible artists in India and were collected on trips to Rajasthan.
